The parade drum is a version of the side drum of larger dimensions, with a stronger and a darker timbre, used in brass bands, with certain processions, being held at the hip height in a 45Âș angle, with the help of a belt. In the symphonic orchestra it is used only when ample, dark, dramatic sounds are needed. Famous examples are found in Till Eulenspiel by R.Strauss, a long tremolo in ff at the end, in the Symphonie Phantastique of H. Berlioz in the fourth movement, the march to the scaffold, at P. I. Tschaikovsky in the 1812 Ouverture, M. Ravel - Alborada del Gracioso.
